NATIONAL HISTORY DAY UPDATE!!! 6th graders Cecelia and Reagan knocked it out of the park on Monday when they presented their website on the history of Social Security. After their presentation, a reporter from The Guardian, who was in the room, stepped out and interviewed them. That doesn’t happen every day. Junior, Emma Manion, was amazing in her performance (play). She took 1st in her room (10 students) and will perform again today in the finals against 10 other rooms. After her performance,she visited the Smithsonian Museum of Native Americans to find the historical character she researched. It took awhile but she found her, Ada Deer. Team Wisconsin is meeting with Senator Baldwin at the Capitol (Johnson is unavailable), then celebrating tonight by going to the Annual Congressional Baseball Game where Republicans and Democrats face off. Each year, Mr. Gutbrod's 8th grade students create capstone projects for a "customer." Jolie K, Harper N, and Skylar G. made a crate for the Heavenly Babies organization, which provides layettes for newborns benefitting mothers who might not otherwise have the materials they need to welcome a baby.
43 WORKS PUBLISHED BY KM STUDENTS IN ART OF WRITING ANTHOLOGY!!! The anthology, which includes original stories, drawings, sculptures, and photographs, is a collection of work created as part of the Art of Writing: Young Authors and Artists Conference held this past December. More than 400 students from across Wisconsin participated in the conference, which is co-sponsored by the Kettle Moraine School District and the Milwaukee Art Museum. Inspired by the museum’s masterpieces, students produced reflective and imaginative responses that demonstrate the powerful intersection of visual and literary arts. The resulting anthology celebrates student voices and visions from all corners of Wisconsin.
“We’re incredibly proud of our students and their exceptional creativity,” said teacher Terry Kaldhusdal, who coordinates the conference with his wife, Janet. “This program not only highlights their talents, but also fosters a deep appreciation for art and storytelling.” One excerpt is from Kettle Moraine 7th grader Bryn M., who wrote, “After all, dreams are like trees. They branch off from your soul, growing deep roots that stay with you forever…” The Art of Writing conference and publication are a longstanding tradition that celebrates young creators and highlights the powerful connection between education and the arts. KM Music Parents Association would like to express our sincere appreciation to all those who attended music events this year and donated generously to support our outstanding KM music programs. Three Kettle Moraine students were named state champions at Saturday’s National History Day (NHD) competition held at UW–Madison. They will now advance to the national contest in June, where they will present their research alongside students from across the U.S. and around the world. Recently, the NHD program experienced unexpected financial challenges due to cancelled grants from the National Endowment for the Arts. Sixth graders Cecilia H. and Reagan H. earned top honors for their website, Balancing Individual Rights and Shared Responsibilities in a Democratic Society, which explored the history of Social Security. HS^2 junior Emma Manion won first place for her individual performance titled, Ada Deer: Rights and Responsibilities in the Pursuit of Restoration of the Menominee Indian Tribe. Each year, approximately 500,000 students participate in NHD, including 10,000 from Wisconsin. This achievement is a tremendous honor for both the students and the Kettle Moraine School District. The cost for each student to attend the national event—held at the University of Maryland’s College Park campus—is significant. Registration is approximately $165, with lodging and meals totaling around $606. Travel expenses add another $600 per student.

KMMS TRACK PRACTICE!!! Delafield Orangetheory Fitness Coach and Kettle Moraine parent, Mel Moose, worked with our Middle School Track program during their practice. They focused on flexibility, strength and the importance of proper form. This is the second time that she has donated her time and skills to help our middle school programming. She also did a conditioning session with the middle school cross country team last fall. The track team athletes were so excited to have her back again and are appreciative of her dedication to health and fitness for all ages! Thank you so much Mel for giving back to the schools and helping our youth!
