Inclement Weather Plans
-
Due to inclement weather it may be necessary to close school buildings for the entire day, or release a school early.
We have set aside one snow day for school closure. Should we require more than one school day, students and staff in grades 6 - 12 will be notified in advance and will engage in distance learning according to their regular schedule of classes.
Students in grades 4K-5 will not receive instruction on these snow days unless they are instructed in advance that this is required. Elementary teachers will engage in professional planning and collaboration.
The decision to close a school building is only made after careful consideration of the best information available. The Superintendent takes several steps each time consideration is given to closing school buildings:
- The bus company representative and the superintendent discuss the road conditions. This discussion usually begins at 4 a.m. unless conditions are predictable on the previous day.
- Routes are driven by a variety of personnel to make judgments regarding safety.
- The National Weather Service is contacted to determine weather forecasts.
- School districts contiguous to Kettle Moraine are contacted.
- If the bus company considers they can transport students to school safely, the schools will be open.
- If the conditions prevent the likelihood of safe transport, school opening will be delayed or schools will be closed.
- The automated telephone, email and text message notification system will be activated using the phone numbers and emails provided in Infinite Campus. Notifications to staff and families are sent out before the local media is alerted.
- Every effort is made to make the decision and notify local media by 5:30 a.m. The information will also be available on the KMSD website. (Always refresh your screen to get up-to-date information.)
- If weather conditions are so severe to warrant sending children home from school early, thoughtful consideration will be given to sending elementary students home prior to secondary students. (In other words, whenever possible, we will try to get elementary students home first.) Parents are urged to plan for such schedule changes so that students will be able to get into their home or know where to go in the neighborhood until parents arrive.
Cold Weather - Closing of school buildings are considered when there is a wind chill warning with wind chills maintaining a level of 35 degrees below zero or colder for an extended period of time, especially if the wind chill warning includes the times students are traveling to and from school. These conditions are often predicted with more advance warning. Elementary students may be supported in distance learning when there is advance notice of the decision.
While no sources that predict weather are perfect, all decisions will be made with a primary consideration for the safety of the students who ride buses, drive cars, or walk to school each day. The school district’s greatest concern is about students who drive themselves and friends to school and students who walk to bus stops and schools, as well as students who ride school buses operated by highly trained and dedicated professional drivers.
When school buildings are closed for the day, the following will apply:
- In most cases, extracurricular activities, interscholastic contests, team practices, field trips, after-school programs, adult and community education classes, professional learning and training courses, and recreation programs in schools and on school grounds are canceled. (In the event that after-schoool/evening activities are NOT canceled, the district will communicate accordingly.)
When the start of school is delayed, the following will apply:
- Offices will open on time and staff will report if reasonably safe to do so.
- Morning field trips will be canceled.
- Automatic phone, email and text notifications will be made using parent contact information through Infinite Campus. Parents - please make sure to have your contact information accurate and current in Infinite Campus at all times. Voice and text messages will be sent using Infinite Campus. School closing news will also be shared with local media.
When schools are released early due to worsening weather conditions during the day, the following will apply:
- As soon as this decision is made, automatic phone notifications will be made using parent contact information through Infinite Campus. Parents - please make sure to have your contact information accurate and current in Infinite Campus at all times.
- School closing news will also be shared by local media.
- Extracurricular activities, interscholastic contests, team practices, field trips, middle school after-school programs, adult and community education classes, professional learning and training courses, and recreation programs in schools and on school grounds are canceled.
- The bus company representative and the superintendent discuss the road conditions. This discussion usually begins at 4 a.m. unless conditions are predictable on the previous day.
Inclement Weather Q&A
-
How is the decision made to close schools?
Posted by:The decision to close schools due to inclement weather is carefully considered with the concern for student and staff safety the primary factor.
The district relies on information from emergency management and state highway administrators about conditions for all roads—not just major highways. KMSD personnel assigned to each school will inspect the conditions of roads, sidewalks, parking lots and bus lanes. The superintendent also communicates with local school districts before announcing a decision to close, delay or release outside of the normal schedule.
-
How, and when, do I find out if KMSD schools are closed due to inclement weather?
Posted by:Information about communication during inclement weather is located on the Emergency Communication webpage.
KMSD’s practice is to make school closing and delayed start decisions by 5AM and providing parent and community announcements by 5:30AM. The district makes every effort to inform our community as early as possible.
-
How do I find out if a particular event is closed due to inclement weather?
Posted by:If KMSD schools are closed, all school activities and athletic events are canceled. If schools are open but you question the safety of weather conditions and travel, please, contact the event organizer for information.
-
Can I elect to keep my child home even if schools are open? Will this be an excused absence?
Posted by:Parents may decide to keep their children home. Parents need to contact their children's schools to excuse the absence. ONLY the parent/guardian can excuse an absence as specified in the student handbook.
-
In the case of a delayed opening, does the school day end later?
Posted by:No. Schools dismiss at their normal times, even if they opened with a one or two hour delay.
